Liquid-phase photo-induced covalent modification (PICM) of single-layer graphene by short-chain fatty acids

タイトル: Liquid-phase photo-induced covalent modification (PICM) of single-layer graphene by short-chain fatty acids著者: Feng, Guilin; Inose, Tomoko; Suzuki, Nozomu; Wen, Han; Taemaitree, Farsai; Wolf, Mathias; Toyouchi, Shuichi; Fujita, Yasuhiko; Hirai, Kenji; Uji-i, Hiroshi抄録: We report an efficient photo-induced covalent modification (PICM) of graphene by short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) with an alkyl chain at the liquid–solid interface for spatially resolved chemical functionalization of graphene. Light irradiation on monolayer graphene under an aqueous solution of the SCFAs with an alkyl chain efficiently introduces sp3-hybridized defects, where the reaction rates of PICM are significantly higher than those in pure water. Raman and IR spectroscopy revealed that a high density of methyl, methoxy, and acetate groups is covalently attached to the graphene surface while it was partially oxidized by other oxygen-containing functional groups, such as OH and COOH. A greater ...
Who commits to the community? Person-community fit, place attachment, and participation in local Japanese communities

タイトル: Who commits to the community? Person-community fit, place attachment, and participation in local Japanese communities著者: Chishima, Yuta; Minoura, Yukihisa; Uchida, Yukiko; Fukushima, Shintaro; Takemura, Kosuke抄録: We hypothesize that person-environment fit between individual values (traditional vs. modern) and environmental characteristics (rural vs. urbanizing communities) promotes place attachment and participation, while previous studies have examined these factors separately. To investigate this hypothesis, we qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed one rural and one urbanizing community under the same local government (Takizawa City) in Iwate Prefecture, a Northeastern region of Japan. In Study 1, qualitative data from brochures and interviews indicated that the rural community highly valued traditions, whereas the urbanizing community accepted changes in the community. In Study 2, we surveyed 1025 adults living in these communities and found that those who ...
An integrated indicator-based approach for constructing an urban flood vulnerability index as an urban decision-making tool using the PCA and AHP techniques: A case study of Alexandria, Egypt

タイトル: An integrated indicator-based approach for constructing an urban flood vulnerability index as an urban decision-making tool using the PCA and AHP techniques: A case study of Alexandria, Egypt著者: Abdrabo, Karim I.; Kantoush, Sameh A.; Esmaiel, Aly; Saber, Mohamed; Sumi, Tetsuya; Almamari, Mahmood; Elboshy, Bahaa; Ghoniem, Safaa抄録: Several cities are exceptionally vulnerable to flood impacts due to increasing urbanization, population growth, and climate change. Quantifying flood vulnerability is useful for identifying the system's weakness, monitoring its evolution, and supporting targeted flood risk adaptation policies. One of the vital aims of assessing urban flood vulnerability is to create an understandable link between flood vulnerability conceptual theories and the daily decision-making process through an easily accessible tool. Although several studies have described the development of an integrated flood vulnerability index (FVI) combining physical, social, ...
Systematic parameterizations of minimal models of microswimming
from Kyoto University Research Information Repository (2023/3/1 9:00:00)
from Kyoto University Research Information Repository (2023/3/1 9:00:00)
タイトル: Systematic parameterizations of minimal models of microswimming著者: Walker J., Benjamin; Ishimoto, Kenta; Gaffney A., Eamonn抄録: Simple models are used throughout the physical sciences as a means of developing intuition, capturing phenomenology, and qualitatively reproducing observations. In studies of microswimming, simple force-dipole models are commonplace, arising generically as the leading-order, far-field descriptions of a range of complex biological and artificial swimmers. Though many of these swimmers are associated with intricate, time varying flow fields and changing shapes, we often turn to models with constant, averaged parameters for intuition, basic understanding, and back-of-the-envelope prediction. In this brief study, via an elementary multitimescale analysis, we examine whether the standard use of a priori-averaged parameters in minimal microswimmer models is justified, asking if their behavioural predictions qualitatively align with those of mode ...

Construction of a T cell receptor signaling range for spontaneous development of autoimmune disease

タイトル: Construction of a T cell receptor signaling range for spontaneous development of autoimmune disease著者: Tanaka, Atsushi; Maeda, Shinji; Nomura, Takashi; Llamas-Covarrubias, Mara Anais; Tanaka, Satoshi; Jin, Lin; Lim, Ee Lyn; Morikawa, Hiromasa; Kitagawa, Yohko; Akizuki, Shuji; Ito, Yoshinaga; Fujimori, Chihiro; Hirota, Keiji; Murase, Tosei; Hashimoto, Motomu; Higo, Junichi; Zamoyska, Rose; Ueda, Ryuzo; Standley, Daron M.; Sakaguchi, Noriko; Sakaguchi, Shimon抄録: Thymic selection and peripheral activation of conventional T (Tconv) and regulatory T (Treg) cells depend on TCR signaling, whose anomalies are causative of autoimmunity. Here, we expressed in normal mice mutated ZAP-70 molecules with different affinities for the CD3 chains, or wild type ZAP-70 at graded expression levels under tetracycline-inducible control. Both manipulations reduced TCR signaling intensity to various extents and thereby rendered those normally deleted self-reactive thymocytes to become po ...
