Library of Congress Announces 2023 Literacy Awards on International Literacy Day Three organizations working to expand literacy and promote reading will be awarded the 2023 Library of Congress Literacy Awards, Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden announced today. Top prizes are being awarded to The News Literacy Project, Downtown Boxing Gym and Worldreader. The Literacy Awards program, sponsored by David M. Rubenstein since 2013, honors organizations that provide exemplary, innovative and replicable strategies to combat illiteracy. For more than 10 years, the Library of Congress has recognized the urgent need to achieve universal literacy through the program. "Literacy is a pathway to an individual’s happiness, health, and wellbeing,” said Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden. “The Library of Congress is proud to honor and celebrate the achievements of these extraordinary organizations, through the generosity of David M. Rubenstein, in their commitment to expanding liter ...

Ada Limón: 'You Are Here' U.S. Poet Laureate to Publish Anthology, Bring Poetry to National Parks Ada Limón’s signature project as the nation’s 24th Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry, “You Are Here,” will feature two major new initiatives: an anthology of commissioned nature poems and poetry installed as public art in seven national parks. “I want to champion the ways reading and writing poetry can situate us in the natural world,” Limón said. “Never has it been more urgent to feel a sense of reciprocity with our environment, and poetry’s alchemical mix of attention, silence, and rhythm gives us a reciprocal way of experiencing nature — of communing with the natural world through breath and presence.” Click here for more information . タイトル: Simulation study of the harmonic structure of lower hybrid waves driven by energetic ions著者: Kotani, Tsubasa; Toida, Mieko; Moritaka, Toseo; Taguchi, Satoshi抄録: By means of one-dimensional, electromagnetic, particle-in-cell simulations considering the effects of energetic-ion injection, we study the harmonic structure of lower hybrid waves (LHWs) driven by energetic ions under the condition where the electron plasma frequency (
Unique solvent effect of water in radical cyclization reaction

タイトル: Unique solvent effect of water in radical cyclization reaction著者: Suzuki, Sara; Govind, Soni Aman; Imamura, Kosuke; Yorimitsu, Hideki; Shinokubo, Hiroshi; Higashi, Masahiro; Sato, Hirofumi抄録: The radical cyclization reaction in the aqueous environment by Yorimitsu et al. is revisited using the RISM-SCF-cSED method, a hybrid of quantum chemistry and statistical mechanics theory for molecular liquids. The difference between the barrier height of the forward reaction from the intermediate E-rot, the cyclization step, and that of the backward reaction is crucial to the reaction yield. Considering the effect of hydrogen bonding through the RISM theory, we found that the barrier height for the forward reaction is lower, especially in water. In other words, considering microscopic solvation effects clearly shows the difference between water and DMSO solvents, explaining the remarkable acceleration of the reaction in the aqueous environment.
Effective magnetic hyperthermia induced by mitochondria-targeted nanoparticles modified with triphenylphosphonium-containing phospholipid polymers

タイトル: Effective magnetic hyperthermia induced by mitochondria-targeted nanoparticles modified with triphenylphosphonium-containing phospholipid polymers著者: Kaneko, Masahiro; Yamazaki, Hiroto; Ono, Takahiro; Horie, Masanobu; Ito, Akira抄録: Magnetic hyperthermia (MHT) is a promising cancer treatment because tumor tissue can be specifically damaged by utilizing the heat generated by nano-heaters such as magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) under an alternating magnetic field. MNPs are taken up by cancer cells, enabling intracellular MHT. Subcellular localization of MNPs can affect the efficiency of intracellular MHT. In this study, we attempted to improve the therapeutic efficacy of MHT by using mitochondria-targeting MNPs. Mitochondria-targeting MNPs were prepared by the modification of carboxyl phospholipid polymers containing triphenylphosphonium (TPP) moieties that accumulate in mitochondria. The mitochondrial localization of polymer-modified MNPs was supported by transmissio ...
