Nuclear spin metrology with nitrogen vacancy center in diamond for axion dark matter detection著者: Chigusa, So; Hazumi, Masashi; Herbschleb, Ernst David; Matsuzaki, Yuichiro; Mizuochi, Norikazu; Nakayama, Kazunori抄録: We present a method to directly detect the axion dark matter using nitrogen vacancy centers in diamonds. In particular, we use metrology leveraging the nuclear spin of nitrogen to detect axion-nucleus couplings. This is achieved through protocols designed for dark matter searches, which introduce a novel approach of quantum sensing techniques based on the nitrogen vacancy center. Although the coupling strength of the magnetic fields with nuclear spins is three orders of magnitude smaller than that with electron spins for conventional magnetometry, the axion interaction strength with nuclear spins is the same order of magnitude as that with electron spins. Furthermore, we can take advantage of the long coherence time by using the nuclear spins for the a ...

Firm Survival in Emerging European Markets: Impacts of COVID-19 Pandemic and Russo-Ukrainian War

Firm Survival in Emerging European Markets: Impacts of COVID-19 Pandemic and Russo-Ukrainian War著者: Kočenda, Evžen; Iwasaki, Ichiro抄録: We investigate the determinants of firm survival in 17 emerging European markets during the dual crises of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russo-Ukrainian war. Using a large dataset of over 59, 000 firms and employing a Cox proportional hazards model, the study evaluates how firm-specific characteristics, regional socio-economic conditions, and institutional quality shaped survival outcomes between 2020 and 2023. The analysis reveals that firm exit was more prevalent in EU member states, likely due to stricter crisis-related restrictions. Socio-economic variables such as population density, tourism dependence, and health expenditures played a critical role, while institutional quality, contrary to expectations, was associated with higher exit rates during crises. The banking sector played a role in influencing firm resilience throu ...
Structural insights into CDF1 accumulation on the CONSTANS promoter via a plant-specific DNA-binding domain

Structural insights into CDF1 accumulation on the CONSTANS promoter via a plant-specific DNA-binding domain著者: Furihata, Hirotake; Zhu, Zhangliang; Nishida, Kaisei; Sakuraba, Yasuhito; Tsuji, Akihiro; Yamashita, Hayato; Nosaki, Shohei; Tachibana, Ryo; Yamagami, Ayumi; Ikeda, Yoshiki; Abe, Masayuki; Sawasaki, Tatsuya; Nakano, Takeshi; Yanagisawa, Shuichi; Tanokura, Masaru; Miyakawa, Takuya抄録: DNA-binding with one-finger (Dof) proteins are a family of plant-specific transcription factors distinguished by the highly conserved Dof DNA-binding domain. Various members play crucial roles in diverse plant biological processes. However, it remains unclear how the Dof domain recognizes a restricted set of promoters for gene regulation by binding to just four nucleotides, AAAG/CTTT. Here we present the crystal structure of the Dof domain of CYCLING DOF FACTOR 1 (CDF1), a well-characterized Dof protein acting as a transcriptional repressor by binding to the CONSTANS promoter ...
Regional disparities in access to urban parks in Osaka City, Japan: spatial analysis using socioeconomic proxy indicators

Regional disparities in access to urban parks in Osaka City, Japan: spatial analysis using socioeconomic proxy indicators著者: Satake, Futaba; Otsuka, Yoshitaka; Imanishi, Junichi抄録: Urban parks improve the quality of the living environment by forming open spaces where people can engage in static and dynamic activities. However, access to urban parks may be uneven and associated with socioeconomic disparities. Because urban parks allow different activities depending on their size, studying their access by size is necessary. This study examined effective socioeconomic status (SES) proxy indicators and the spatial association between SES proxy indicators and access to urban parks by size in Osaka City, Japan. The results revealed that the average percentage of professional and managerial workers, years of schooling, and roadside land price may be effective SES proxy indicators in Osaka City. The relationship between the three SES proxy indicators and access to urban p ...
The transition to flying insects: lessons from evo-devo and fossils

from Kyoto University Research Information Repository (2025/4/1 9:00:00)
The transition to flying insects: lessons from evo-devo and fossils著者: Ohde, Takahiro; Prokop, Jakub抄録: Insects are the only arthropod group to achieve powered flight, which facilitated their explosive radiation on land. It remains a significant challenge to understand the evolutionary transition from nonflying (apterygote) to flying (pterygote) insects due to the large gap in the fossil record. Under such a situation, ontogenic information has historically been used to compensate for fossil evidence. Recent evo-devo studies support and refine a paleontology-based classical hypothesis that an ancestral exite incorporated into the body wall contributed to the origin of insect wings. The modern hypothesis locates an ancestral precoxa leg segment with an exite within the hexapod lateral tergum, reframing the long-standing debate on the insect wing origin. A current focus is on the contributions of the incorporated exite homolog and surrounding tissues, such as the pl ...
